World's largest photovoltaic green hydrogen production project starts
2021-11-18
The surging news was informed on November 30 that Sinopec Group held a cloud launching ceremony in Beijing, Urumqi and Kuche, Xinjiang on the same day, announcing that the construction of Sinopec Xinjiang Kuche Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project, the first 10,000-ton PV green hydrogen demonstration project in China, was officially launched. This is the world's largest PV green hydrogen production project under construction, with an annual production capacity of up to 20,000 tons of green hydrogen after it is put into operation, which is of great significance in promoting the development of the green hydrogen industry chain, advancing the transformation and upgrading of the energy industry, promoting the economic and social development of the Xinjiang region and ensuring national energy security.
In order to distinguish the cleanliness of different sources of hydrogen production, the industry has labelled grey hydrogen, blue hydrogen and green hydrogen according to their carbon intensity from high to low. Green hydrogen is produced from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power, and produces basically no greenhouse gases, eliminating carbon emissions at source. Sinopec is the largest hydrogen producer in China, currently producing around 3.9 million tonnes of hydrogen per year. The Xinjiang Kuche Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project is the first typical demonstration project of the company that goes through the whole process of green hydrogen production and utilization, including scenery power generation, green power transmission, green power hydrogen production, hydrogen storage, hydrogen transportation and green hydrogen refining.
It is reported that Xinjiang Kuche Green Hydrogen Demonstration Project is the first project in China to make hydrogen directly from photovoltaic power generation on a large scale, with a total investment of nearly RMB 3 billion, mainly including five major parts: photovoltaic power generation, power transmission and transformation, hydrogen production from electrolytic water, hydrogen storage and hydrogen transmission. The project will build a new photovoltaic power plant with an installed capacity of 300 MW and an average annual power generation capacity of 618 million kWh, an electrolytic water hydrogen production plant with an annual capacity of 20,000 tons, a hydrogen storage spherical tank with a hydrogen storage capacity of about 210,000 standard cubic meters, a hydrogen transmission pipeline with a hydrogen transmission capacity of 28,000 standard cubic meters per hour and supporting transmission and substation facilities. The project is expected to be completed and put into operation in June 2023, and the green hydrogen produced will be supplied to Sinopec Tahe Refinery to replace the existing natural gas fossil energy for hydrogen production. It is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 485,000 tons per year, and will contribute an average of 130 million RMB to the local GDP and create tax revenue of more than 18 million RMB per year.
In his speech at the launch ceremony, Mr. Ma Yongsheng, Chairman of Sinopec Group Corporation and Secretary of the Party Group, said that hydrogen energy is one of the clean energy sources with the greatest development potential. At present, Sinopec is accelerating to build a world-leading clean energy and chemical company, constructing "one base, two wings and three new" industrial pattern, and will vigorously develop new energy business during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, and take hydrogen energy as the main direction of new energy business. This demonstration project is a key project of Sinopec to build the No.1 hydrogen energy company and a new strategic achievement of cooperation between enterprises and the local community, which is of great significance to promote energy transformation, promote social and economic development in Xinjiang and ensure energy security in China.
According to the introduction, the above-mentioned project will create a new development path for green hydrogen refining after it is put into operation, and will have a significant demonstration effect on the large-scale use of green hydrogen by refining enterprises to achieve carbon emission reduction. At the same time, all major equipment, machinery and core materials will be localized, such as photovoltaic components, electrolytic tank, hydrogen storage tank, hydrogen pipeline and other major equipment, machinery and core materials used in the project will be localized.
Sinopec said that during the 14th Five-Year Plan period, the company will vigorously develop new energy business and accelerate the building of "China's No.1 hydrogen energy company". In addition to the Xinjiang Kuche project, in terms of green hydrogen transportation, four hydrogen refuelling stations serving the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics have been officially put into operation, and a total of 38 hydrogen refuelling stations have been built across the country; meanwhile, Sinopec has a sales network of 30,000 gas stations, and has the industrial foundation and first-mover advantage to develop hydrogen transportation. By 2025, Sinopec plans to build 1,000 oil-hydrogen combined stations and hydrogen refuelling stations. In terms of green hydrogen technology, its first independently developed demonstration station for hydrogen production from electrolytic water by proton exchange membrane (PEM) has been put into operation.
It is understood that Sinopec will continue to increase investment in green hydrogen business and is laying out a number of green hydrogen refinery demonstration projects.
